“The Guitar” is a story of one woman’s spiritual, emotional and creative transformation. One morning, “mouse-burger” Melody “Mel” Wilder is diagnosed with a terminal illness, fired from her thankless job and abandoned by her boyfriend. With nothing left to lose, given two months to live, she spends her entire life’s savings renting an empty palatial loft in the Village. Thinking she’ll never have to pay the piper, she lives off her credit cards, fills the loft with the fanciest products, sensually engages both the parcel-delivery man and a pizza delivery girl and teaches herself to play the electric guitar she’s craved since childhood. These life affirming experiences transform her irrevocably.
A more interesting film would have stuck closer to the original story, depicting Melody as an architect of her own fate, but apparently a character resigned to death and rewarded with life was preferable to one who fights against it and similarly wins out. Good fortune happens to Melody only by chance, which is to say screenwriting contrivance, and she moves through the film as if she were on a conveyor belt. It’s tempting to read
The Guitar as advocating a life of luxe as a type of psychological colonic, but deprivation could just as easily have set Melody on the right path as indulgence. That Redford and Poe opt for the latter route ultimately reveals nothing about Melody, an almost passive player in her life, than it does about their own fantasies.
Melody doesn’t connect to people as much as she does to her most extreme purchase — a red electric guitar she’s longed for since her unhappy childhood (glimpsed in brief but distracting flashbacks). Like her heroine, Redford seems most comfortable with solitude; as Melody teaches herself to play, experimenting with chords and strums, the film becomes a simple, eloquent portrait of a person searching for and ultimately finding her voice. Helmer is aided in no small measure by a lovely, vanity-free perf by Burrows, who tamps down her natural radiance, speaks in a hoarse voice and effortlessly carries “The Guitar” through its long stretches of silence.
